Pushkar Camel Fair is a rare combination of religious fervour and cultural vibrancy in Rajasthan. It is the best time when you can interact with tribal folks and understand their culture. The fair is organized in the holy town of Pushkar located about 13 km from Ajmer, on the edge of a small and beautiful lake. This quiet little town of eastern Rajasthan boasts of having the only temple dedicated to Lord Brahma in entire India. Apart from that, the holy town of Pushkar is visited for its over 400 temples and 52 bathing ghats. October to March is the best time suggested to visit Pushkar town.

Every Year, the full moon day of Kartik Purnima in October-November is celebrated as the 'Pushkar Fair', when thousands of devotees throng the Pushkar lake to take a holy dip. Pushkar Fair of India is the world's largest camel fair, which witnesses over 50,000 camels every year.

Prominent Activities

Camel trading, camel races, folk performances, body tattooing, ethnic shopping, puppet shows, acrobatics, best breed contest, moustache competition, bridal competition etc. are organized to enliven the event. Bards and poets can also be seen reciting and singing tales of valor and heroism of the bygone days. Besides this, thousands of cows, camels, sheep, goats and their traders stay in the tents on the golden sands alongside the lake.

Those who love to shop, can visit the small shops famous for the woolen blankets of Merta, bead necklaces of Nagaur, textiles printed in Ajmer and Jodhpur, brassware of Jodhpur and Jaipur etc. A few stalls also sell saddles, ropes, and assorted household items.

The main highlight of the fair are the animals dressed with a killing look. These are bought, sold, decked up and paraded on the sand dunes, presenting a picturesque sight. Apart from that, their owners are also seen wearing colorful turbans and flaunting long mustaches.
