Ranthambore Wildlife Sanctuary

Located at the junction of the undulating Aravalli and Vindhya Hill ranges (in Sawai Madhopur district), Ranthambore is popular for tigers, lakes, traditional arts and much more. Background

This royal wildlife sanctuary was established in the year 1955, which later became a National Park in 1981. In between, Ranthambore National Park was also designated as a tiger Reserve in 1973. today, it covers over an area of 400 sq km.

Fascinating Attractions

Ranthambore National Park itself is a major tourist centre in the area which draws various adventure and wildlife lovers from all over the world. Apart from tiger, one can also spot leopards, striped hyenas, Indian wild boar, chinkara, jackals, Indian flying foxes, sloth bears, sambar deer, chital, nilgai, macaques and mongoose in the dense areas. The area is a home to over 300 species of plants, various reptiles and birds as well.

Some other prominent attractions of the region are:

  • Ranthambore Fort, built deep inside the forest area, is a 10th century structure. It reminds tourists of an earlier era when such huge structures determined the power of the ruling clan.
  • Ranthambore School of Art is a learning centre for the local villagers. They enjoy painting and sketching here.
  • Lakes or small water reservoirs like the Padal Talao, Rajbagh Talao and Malik Talao add some more beauty to the place.

Mostly people visit the place in the months of Nov - Feb or April - May. If adventure is your cup of tea, Jungle Safari is a must try activity here that takes you to a good network of gravel tracks in open-sided jeeps driven by ranger.
